Abstract of "Pragmatics in Wonderland" (1983)
- An examination of instances of verbal humor in Lewis Carroll's Alice
books that can best be explained by referece to such pragmatic frameworks
as Austin's speech-act theory (elaborated by Searle); Grice's theory of
conversational implicature; Sacks, Schlegoff, and Jefferson's analysis
of conversational turn-taking; and Brown and Levinson's semantic analysis
of conversational politeness.
