A Search and Browse synopsis of the documentation (published as an 11.5-MB CD or printed "doorstop" three-volume set) for the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), made available from the Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia, including Search the TEI Guidelines and Browse the TEI Guidelines.
After three drafts, the Text Encoding Initiative has released the documentation concluding their initial development effort as Guidelines for Electronic Text Encoding and Interchange (P3). The TEI is intended to provide a standard format for machine-readable-text and data-interchange research in the humanities, using an adaptation of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). The Web synopsis of P3 covers all the major headings of the full document, and includes such examples as:
