THIS IS A useful if somewhat dry account of various illustrated editions of works of English literature. Hodnett devotes a chapter to each of seven leading printers, authors, or illustrators: John Day; Shakespeare; William Blake; John Martin (Paradise Lost); Hablot Knight Brown, or "Phiz"; John Tenniel (Alice); Edward Burne-Jones; and Aubrey Beardsley. Detailed history of the various editions, including such important information as the publisher's or editor's instructions to the artist/illustrator. (Rachel Mines.)
