Research opportunities in English at the University of Minnesota
Libraries
The University of Minnesota Libraries
constitute one of the strongest research
libraries in the United States. Holdings in English and American
literature
and related areas are generally reliable and include areas of unusual
strength.
The electronic catalogue, MNCAT, provides
detailed bibliographical information about the collections, and also
gives access to a large number of digitized texts, including primary
texts and scholarly journals. For example, the following databases
provide searchable access:
- Early English
Books Online (the texts of virtually all the books that were
published in the English language between 1475 and 1700; in progress)
- Eighteenth
Century Collections Online ("in essence, every significant
English-language and foreign-language title printed in the United
Kingdom" between 1700 and 1800, along with "thousands of works
published in the Americas"; in progress)
- Early
American Imprints ("Digital Evans"; the texts of virtually all the
books that were published in the United States from 1639 to 1800)
- Literature
Online (a large number of literary texts that range from the early
modern to the modern period, as well as numerous secondary works)
- English Poetry
Database ("the works of almost 1,350 poets from 600 to 1900";
see production details
and critical reception)
- English Verse
Drama ("more than 2,000 works by around 450 named authors and
approximately 230
anonymous works, from the Shrewsbury Fragments of the late thirteenth
century to the end of the nineteenth century")
- The
Making of Modern Law: Legal Treatises, 1800–1926 (more than 21,000
works, British and American)
- JSTOR

sciences)
- Project
Muse (leading academic journals in journals in literary theory,
classics, history and cultural studies,
philosophy, film, theatre and performing arts, political science, and
mathematics)
